THE BOYS IN THE BOAT by Daniel James Brown. They are going to make this into a movie. It's a true story about the 1936 Olympic Rowing Team. It is excellent! Guys would like this just as much as girls. When you're done reading it make sure you look up the Youtube video on it and the trailer of the movie. It is amazing what some people go through in life.
POPE JOAN by Donna Woolfolk Cross. I loved this book! You have to read all the way through after the book to see if it was a true story. I am believing it was! Wikipedia said this: Pope joan was, according to popular legend, a woman who reigned as pope for a few years during the Middle Ages. Her story first appeared in chronicles in the 13th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe.
This is the description from Amazon on this book:
In this international bestseller, Donna Woolfolk Cross brings the Dark Ages to life in all their brutal splendor and shares the dramatic story of a woman whose strength of vision led her to defy the social restrictions of her day.
For a thousand years her existence has been denied. She is the legend that will not die –- Pope Joan, the ninth-century woman who disguised herself as a man and rose to become the only female ever to sit on the throne of St. Peter. Now in this riveting novel, Cross paints a sweeping portrait of an unforgettable heroine who struggles against restrictions her soul cannot accept.
Brilliant and talented, young Joan rebels against medieval social strictures forbidding women to learn. When her brother is brutally killed during a Viking attack, Joan takes up his cloak–and his identity–and enters the monastery of Fulda. As Brother John Anglicus, Joan distinguishes herself as a great scholar and healer. Eventually, she is drawn to Rome, where she becomes enmeshed in a dangerous web of love, passion, and politics. Triumphing over appalling odds, she finally attains the highest office in Christendom–wielding a power greater than any woman before or since. But such power always comes at a price . . .
Oh this is good! Please read it!!
THESE IS MY WORDS by Nancy E. Turner This is Book One in a Trilogy. I absolutely loved these books! The second book is SARAH's Quilt and the third book is THE STAR GARDEN.
This book comes from a Diary from the authors Great Grandmother I believe. The main character, Sarah Prine reminds me so much of Ashley in Books 2 and 3. I can just see Ashley being strong like that. I love these books!!
THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN by Kate Morton. This book is fantastic! This book takes you on an unforgettable journey across continents and through generations as two women try to uncover their family's secret past. It is a fabulous mystery!
THE NIGHTENGALE by Kristin Hannah
I have really come to love the author Kristin Hannah. All of her books are so different! This book is set in France during WWII. Two sisters are faced with innumerable hardships and choices to make as the Nazi's invade their country and their home. One of the sisters actually puts herself in dangerous situations as she goes "underground" in her attempt to fight the Nazi's. This book is about sibling relationships, loss, grief and forgiveness. Check it out!
The INVENTION OF WINGS by Sue Monk Kidd. She also wrote The SECRET LIFE OF BEES, which is another of my favorites! The Invention of Wings is about two girls, one white, one black, who are trapped with lives that they cannot change, but ultimately grow into inspirational women. You will fall in love with the characters. This book is about slavery and you will love Handful. And the rich girl tries to change the world, and in part, she does! This is also based on a true story about the Grimke sisters. At the end of the book the author will tell you which parts were true and which ones she invented for sake of the story.
Ok folks, these are a few BOOK CHOICES and next month I'll add more!
